More Wet Science: A String of Spikes

Preparing our experiment and writing our notesSince we’d already learned about osmosis, our experiment last Friday was to see what would happen if the water moving by osmosis had something else dissolved in it.

All set up, just need to wait 2 daysWe mixed 1 tbsp of baking soda into each plastic cup of water and put one end of a cotton string into each cup.  The tricky part is not to move, jiggle, tap, wiggle, bump, or otherwise cause a stir for the cups.  In our house, that’s a tall order.  Almost everything can be reached by at least one of the kidlets — more if you consider how often the step stool gets used.  And if it’s up high, well, the furniture also moves when you throw an impromptu dance party in the living room — hey!  the whole room shakes then!

Results beginning to happenWe had to move the project to my bedroom (very carefully) to try to keep it safe after some rambunctiousness in the living room shook the tv unit.  But we still managed to get some results after 2 days of waiting.
