I picked up this little science book at my local craft and hobby store for a buck and decided to use it for group science lessons at our house. We’re focusing more on learning correct method, data recording, and observations for science experiments in general so this book is perfectly suited to us right now.
First off, we prepared our notebooks. We started by writing in a title for our experiment, a simple question (What will happen when we leave a gummy bear in water overnight?), and a prediction. My daughter (who is in grade 2) wrote her prediction on her own to practice her printing skills. My son (who is in SK) had some assistance to read the prediction statement and then chose one of the three options.
There was a lengthy discussion about the time Noah tried to take a drink from a water bottle while sucking on candies at Gramma’s house and how one of the candies ended up inside the water bottle and dissolved. With much thought, Anna predicted the gummy bear would get smaller and maybe dissolve. Noah, however, decided that maybe the gummy bear would get bigger because a giant gummy bear would be pretty awesome!
We left the gummy bears in water overnight and the next day we noted the time when we emptied the water. We took new measurements of the gummy bears and made new drawings of them. Noah was excited to have guessed correctly and wanted to discuss the possibilities of growing the gummy bears longer to see if they would become people-sized. We also had a discussion about what “accurate” means and looked at which predictions were accurate.
To finish up, we wrote out full conclusion statements for the experiment and I read the kidlets an explanation of what happened (osmosis). The kidlets giggled while trying to pronounce “osmosis” and now they have a basic understanding of what that is and how it works.
This science experiment is great practice with:
- taking measurements
- reading time
- careful observation (“When you do an experiment, it’s important to follow the directions carefully and to watch closely to see what happens at each step.” page 2)
- sequencing (before and after)
- and critical thinking (thinking about what we know and past experiences in order to make an accurate prediction)
