Apple Orchard 2012

I have been looking forward to having 2 bushels of Macintosh apples to bake with and freeze for the winter.  Sadly, this will not be a good year to realize that dream.  Apparently the weather this year created huge apple crop failures and prices are very high compared to previous years.  Also, the farm where I pick up my macs seems to have closed since last fall…  We drove by twice just to make sure.  It was a sad moment.  I think I’m going to have to go searching for another farm nearby to get some macs and hope for a bushel at a reasonable price this year…

That said, we did manage to get out to a local orchard for some family apple picking fun on Saturday.  Mountain Apple Orchard is a great place to hang out on a Saturday with the family!

We went specifically to pick some Honey Golds but we also picked up some Empires.  The only reason I don’t buy my macs at this orchard is because they don’t sell by the bushel. We took the wagon ride out to the orchard where we found lots of apples to pick (and lots of varieties to choose from!).Just look at all those windfalls!  Wow!This orchard has lots of free activities, including a corn maze, straw jumping, and play ground.  We enjoyed finding used books for sale from the local library charity group and we loved the local artisans displaying their wares.  Aren’t these sculptures amazing? We had a lot of fun!  Levi thought this was a good way to relax around the house when we got home in the afternoon.
