Nutmeg Cookies

This is a cookie that my grandmother used to make and my mom used to make with us when we were kids.  It’s easy for kids to join in on this one.

4 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 egg
1 cup shortening
2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup water mixed with 1 tsp baking soda

Mix all the ingredients well until you have a nice soft dough (add a little flour if it’s too sticky).  On floured surface, roll dough out to 1/4″ thickness.  If you roll thinner, the cookies will be crunchier.  If you roll thicker, the cookies will be softer.  Dip cookie cutters in flour and cut.  Place the cookies on a baking sheet and place a raisin in the centre of each one.

Bake the cookies 10 minutes at 350 or until just light brown on edges.
Here is a photo of the ones we made today.  How can you not like a cookie that has raisin eyes and a raisin belly button?!
